Summer Prints

Holy Moly!!  Is it August already?  I am still living in the past – back to June – where I took a week long vacation with my boyfriend and his family.  We vacationed at Martha’s Vineyard and it was just the escape I needed!  My days went something like this: Wake up with coffee on the back porch while looking at the beach, go to the beach, come home for dinner, shower, head back to the beach (with wine) to catch the sunset, back home to sleep, repeat.  Martha’s Vineyard is huge about outdoor showering – like, every house has a private outdoor shower.  It was secluded and still had a perfect view of the beach.

Another reason I like the beach so much is it requires no make-up!  Big hat, sunglasses, sunscreen ,and a bathing suit.  You’re all set!  Packing is rather easy – I think I packed one dress for a ‘nice dinner’, two outfits (hint: this is one …) to hit the towns in, three pairs of shoes….aaaand 5 bathing suits and 5 swimsuit cover ups.  Just because I’m on the beach without makeup doesn’t mean I actually want to look like a bum…

This dress from New York and Company was flowy enough that I could wear it the day after eating a big lobster dinner and consuming glasses and glasses of wine.  The Panama hat is a must when you’re out in the sun all day. I couldn’t resist the gladiator sandals either. They were a fun twist for this summer dress and, thankfully, I did not have a tan line at the end of the day. {That would have been awkward}

We went into Oak Bluffs this day which is the more ‘touristy’ spot among the three towns. Any souvenir you want you will find in Oak Bluffs. I purchased a shirt I had my eye on last year. To my surprise, it was half off this summer! My buyer’s remorse paid off for once!!!

Collaboration

I’m so, sooo happy to talk about my collaboration with one of my best friends!  This isn’t the first time that I’ve blogged about Amber – she was also the main event of my very first post from March last year!  She had just accepted the proposal of marriage to her ol’ ball and chain, Danny 😉 Their wedding was March of this year and I wish we could relive that night over and over again!  Amber and I basically did relive her wedding night over because we went through their 4,000 camera roll of pics from their photographer, Martin Digital. Amaaaazing photos, by the way!

Anyway!  Amber just started a blog of her own and I couldn’t be more proud of her!  She is an art teacher in Cincinnati and is so creative! Whenever I have the urge to be crafty, she’s my go to person for advice!  One of her blog posts is about Bucket Lists, which really inspired me to make a bucket list of my own.  I have so many things that I want to do or accomplish in my lifetime – everything is just milling around in my head.  Might as well get it down on paper so I have a constant reminder of my goals.  We had a lot of fun making our lists – and we looked cute doing it 🙂

Having a bucket list reminds me that there are no limits.  A bucket list isn’t someone else telling me what I should do or how to live my life – my list contains my own thoughts (…and maybe a couple from Amber’s list that I copied….).  There are already a number of things that I’ve accomplished I never thought possible – recording a song, moving to another state by myself, and conquering my fear of heights with the slip n fly (http://www.ohiodreams.com/photos/slip-n-fly).  Now that I’ve created a list, I’m looking forward to checking each item off and who knows what else I will add to the list?!

Faux Fur + Floppy Fedora = Bohemian-Chic

This fall has been all about faux fur and it’s a great transition into winter, as well!  I’ve always like fur, but it hasn’t always been in style.  About three years ago, I purchased a black fur vest from New York and Company, wore it for a season and then BAM – fur is out.  This is why I’m a clothes hoarder – trends come and go too quickly.  I still have my black vest and now, I’ve added this brown vest from Forever 21 to my wardrobe, too!

I scored this floppy felt hat at the DSW sample sale – $1 – HOLLA!  It was probably my favorite find from this year.  It’s the cherry on top to the outfit, if you will.

The horizontal strips on my top paired nicely with the horizontal stripes on my vest.  I completed my look with a statement necklace, jeggings and over the knee boots for extra warmth (You can still see snow in the background. I mean, it’s Ohio, so it was warm this day, but not THAT warm..).

What are some of your favorite bohemian looks?

Happy Thanksgiving!

There is so much to give thanks for this year!  Not to start off on the dark side, but I’ve always been thankful for having all 4 of my grandparents until I was 24.  I have a special bond with all of them.  This year, I’m thankful for the times I get to spend with my Grandpa, esp after my grandmother passed.  He lives in Virginia Beach.  Ever since I was younger, I started calling him Bumpy and called my grandma, Bada.  The start of Bada of Bumpy began – and the nicknames stuck with everyone!

When I picked him up from the airport, I brought him to my neck of the woods – Short North – and we hit up The Pearl’s happy hour – beers and oysters. SO DELICIOUS!

I even sweet talked my Bumpy into taking my blog pictures for me.  He’s really into photography – normally birds – so I think taking photos of an actual human was a new experience for him.

As I picked out my Thanksgiving attire – comfort was my number one goal.  This oversized varsity sweater has been my go to this fall.  I first fell in love with it when it was the cover photo on Cosmo’s Sept edition. When I found it a few weeks later on Francesca’s website, I scooped it up.  I paired it with a Chambray shirt for extra warmth (the sweater is more thin than I would have wanted).  These camo pants were a no brainer because who isn’t thankful for the brave men defending our company.  I am very thankful to live in America.  Land of the great!  I kept it basic with these cognac flats.

My family has all of the food covered this year, so I was in charge of table decorations.  I used a lot of leaves, candles, mesh, pumpkins, and GLITTER.  I also took to pinterest to learn about napkin folding.  I’ve impressed myself.

What are you most thankful for this year?

My Best Bargain Yet!

Would you believe me if I told you my dress cost less than these shoes??!  Well, that’s a fact, believe it or not!

Thanks to Francesca’s and their amazing FLASH SALE, I scored this dress for only $29.99! I couldn’t wait to receive it in the mail, and it came just in time to wear to a friend’s wedding.  It was an outdoor wedding, but the dress was a little heavier so I wasn’t cold like I anticipated – oh, listen to me, “Cold” in August?? I know it’s 93 degrees this weekend, but a few weekends ago, it was down in the 50’s…. are other states feeling these temps??

Moving on…..

I loved the fit and flare of this dress! Not to mention, it was easy to dance in – I was the one who requested B.Spears ten times, you’re welcome, wedding guests!  Because of the floral texture and the beaded waistband, jewelry wasn’t really an option with this.  Sometimes, less is more and that was the case for this dress.  If I wore silver jewelry, I would have paired it he dress with some silver bracelets for some extra Bling!  But these BCBG suede dorry heels took care of that extra Bling for me!  Talk about “W-O-W” Best part is they were soft suede so I was actually comfortable all night for my first time wearing them.

DId I mention the best part?! Francesca’s is having 30% off right now on dresses.  Score this Jun and Ivy Embellished Floral dress for 30% off (Regular $118).  I have to say that buying this dress during their flash sale was one of my best bargains yet….. Ain’t that the truth!!!

A Birthday Collection

When it comes to my birthday, I don’t mess around! It only comes once a year so I start celebrating the first of July (I mean, America is already celebrating Christmas before Thanksgiving…. why should my birthday be any different?).

In 2014, I’ve now been living in Columbus for a year now.  I moved back from Minneapolis because I missed my friends, my family…. I was professionally happy, but I was still missing something to complete my personal happiness.  I can honestly say that now I am personally happy being so close to my family, living in the same city as my best friends, and being swept off my feet every time I’m with my boyfriend.

I’ve learned to realize what I love about life, what makes me happy, and that the future can change focus.  I’ve accomplished professional goals and personal (débuting a pop song, starting this blog….).

This year, I had my nearest and dearest meet me out for martinis and dinner, a fantastic seafood dinner with my parents (I absolutely recommend the Lobster and Shrimp stuffed cod !!  My mouth is watering now just thinking about dinner – OMG), and to end my birthday month, a romantic dinner with the boyfriend.

I’m happy, grateful, and lucky to live another year!  I’m also freaking out that 3-0 is just that much closer……

I had bigger things to worry about than turning 30 right now, with all of my birthday plans comes several birthday outfits:

Seattle, Seafood, and Crop Tops

After returning from the East Coast, I waited exactly one week before heading to the west coast: Seattle, Washington.  Seattle is a city that has been at the top of my bucket list for years now.  Everything from the space needle to Pike Place and the gum wall to whale watching and hiking at Discovery Park.  All of these activities sounded great to me!

It was quite the impromptu trip, but I’m not one to pass up on an opportunity to travel!  I originally wasn’t even staying for 48 hours, but I got my flight changed and took a red eye back to Columbus giving me 12 extra hours to enjoy the city!

It sure was hard getting used to the time change.  My friend and I landed at 5pm Pacific Time and  I made it until 11pm – in my defense, it was 2am Eastern time and a Monday.

I packed 4 outfits total: A nice dress for nice dinner, an outfit to wear during my only full day, an outfit to wear out my 2nd night, and a travel outfit.  On my first full day in Seattle, we knocked out all tourist activities: Pike Place, Post Alley, coffee from the first Starbucks (had to shove some bows, but let’s face it,  the coffee just tastes better at the original starbucks!), drinks at Pike Brewing Company, dinner at the Crab Pot restaurant (check out their seafests), and Pier 57.

With this outfit, I experimented with a crop top and high waisted shorts!  I have always thought, as long as your belly button is covered, you’re wearing a crop top properly. If you’re belly button is peeking out, it then becomes a belly shirt.  I didn’t exactly follow my own rules because my belly button showed more than I wanted.  But these shorts have the cutest print and an elastic waistband which meant I could eat as much fresh salmon, kale, and beer as I wanted from Place Pigalle. Trust me, it is a good combo!  I left it plain on top because I wanted the focus to be on my shorts (and not my midriff).  I’ve been on a fedora kick ever since my beach vaca – hats keep the sun out of my face without giving me sunglass tan lines.  The weather was perfect – nothing but blue skies and I felt comfortable exploring Pike Place all day!

Colored Pumps

June 27, 2014

So, who’s ready to ROCK their wardrobe this summer? Wearing colorful pumps can give an instant boost of confidence and add flair to any outfit. But with SO many colors to choose from, a little outfit guidance is key. Lucky for us, our Style Expert Abby has some great advice!
Be honest. How many pairs of colored pumps are in your closet?
A lot…a LOT! I’m actually a huge fan of colored pumps because they make any outfit pop. I think I’ve got at least one in every shade.
Any favorite colors?
A bright coral goes with everything, especially in the summer. And it makes my skin look tan! I’m always a fan of blue, too. Depending on your skin tone, anything from a teal to a royal blue can work wonders. But turquoise might be my personal favorite right now!
So blue shades are a must-have for summer. Any other summer colors we need to have?
I love tangerine and apricot shades. Fuchsia is fun, too. Which reminds me: it’s also a great idea to bring some bright color into your tote bags or clutches. The brighter, the better—why not?
What about as we transition into fall?
Jewel tones make for great transition colors, like a nice emerald green. Aubergine is also perfect for summer-to-fall.
I’m going to throw some colors out there and you tell me what you would wear with it. Ready?
Go for it!
Red?
Oooh, red. A little lacy black dress! Or for a more casual look, some boyfriend jeans and a white tee.
Navy?
I’m really into the navy/orange combination. Oh, and navy pumps with white jeans—so cute!
Yellow?
I’d probably pair heels with a floral midi dress. Summer to the max.
Thanks for the awesome color inspiration, Abby! Any final advice?
Actually, yes! Don’t forget about your toenail color. Sometimes, especially in an office setting, you might want to play it safe with your fingernails—but with your toes, anything goes!

Maxi dresses for Spring!

I first laid eyes on this maxi via Pinterest!  Is it just me or does every girl wish she could turn their fashion Pinterest board into their actual closet?  I was determined to have this dress – two of my favorite things: Maxi dresses and chevron print!  This dress was kind of made for me…..and every other girl, for that matter!  It was SOLD OUT!  After performing several google searches, I finally found an online boutique that was restocking the black/mint chevron dress in just a week!  I set my calendar alarm so I would be prepared to purchase! I think that started the growth of my online shopping addiction…

Moving on…. This coral teardrop necklace (also an online purchase *ahem*) is a great pop of color with the maxi dress.  Coral and mint might be my favorite color combo.  Add this cropped jean jacket and black flops and I had the perfect sprint outfit!  My jean jacket is at least eight years old. I worked at American Eagle in high school and still have more than half of the clothes I bought back then.  I am a clothes hoarder – can’t even part with things I don’t wear.  Good thing jean jackets are back!

Neonnnnnnn

Now that the sun has finished hibernating (cold weather, your days are numbered!), the Short North is bustling with joggers, bikers, dog walkers, coffee drinkers, friends brunching and so much more!  What do these types of people have in common?  They’re all wearing neon!

I, of course, do not want to be left out of the trend!  I love these neon mint pants – think Essie’s mint candy apple nail polish.  But, if my pants are loud, they will speak for themselves.  I wanted to keep the top neutral. I love basics!  Dress them up, dress them down.  I picked up this striped shirt when I was vacationing in Madrid back in 2011.

Time out.  Can we focus on this necklace for a minute?  I love the color combos and faux gems that make up this necklace.  An add for Sammy Dress Clothing was on my Facebook news feed awhile ago, promoting an inexpensive high waisted swimsuit.  I ended up purchasing this necklace for $11!  From my research, I’ve gathered that Sammy Dress sells popular necklaces at a discounted price by changing the name of the jewelry.  So you really have to search for what you want, but you’ll definitely get a bang for your buck!

Get wild with this leopard print skinny belt.  It’s not holding up my pants – it’s purely for decoration!

I just bought these shoes.  Something about the brown/black combo with the chunky heel.  Not to mention, the designer, Franco Sarto, makes the trendiest shoes comfortable!

How are you incorporating neon into your Spring wardrobe?
